Definition

Protein-losing enteropathy is the abnormal loss of protein from the digestive tract, or the inability of the digestive tract to take in proteins.

This condition can be a symptom of diseases that cause ulcers in the digestive tract. Such diseases include inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease.

The condition can also be caused by increased pressure in the gut. This may occur with a variety of conditions, including cancers and congestive heart failure.
